LinkIndex Demonstration Edition

The enclosed Xtension is a fully working copy of LinkUp! that will allow you to evaluate all of its functions. It is, however, restricted in the number of index/table of contents entries that you are able to implement.

By way of illustration, we have included a file , LinkIndex Tour that contains some pre-marked Index and Table of Contents entries. Install LinkIndex by copying it to your Quark program folder, as you would for any other Xtension, and copy the demonstration file and LinkIndex/TOC Utility to the folder of your choice.

Open the LinkIndex Tour file and then enable LinkIndex from the Utilities menu, and you may then switch on the LinkIndex palette from the View menu, which provides a short cut to marking new codes within a document. If you click onto the underlined text areas you will find that you can edit the record cards that hold the Index and Table of Contents entries, which you can freely edit.

The three levels that appear on Index cards correspond to three separate index entries for that markup. Each of these three entries can then have text specified at either a single or dual level.

To add a new Index or Table of Contents entry, underline some text in the area of the document that the entry that relates to, and then choose to add an appropriate record type either from the palette or the menu.

Generating an Index

To actually generate an index/table of contents you must follow a two stage process.

Firstly, select the generate option from the LinkIndex menu, and then choose to create either an Index or a Table of Contents. You will then be asked for a filename which will hold a temporary file that LinkIndex uses. You can accept the default filename, but note the folder that you are storing it into.

The next stage is to launch the separate LinkIndex/TOC utility, and choose to generate an Index or TOC from the main file menu. You will then be taken into a screen that allows you to pick multiple temporary files for inclusion in the finished Index/TOC. Locate the temporary file that you created in the previous stage and add it into the inclusion list, and then click the 'Done' button.

You will then be prompted either to confirm that you wish to include Alpha Caps (for an Index) or that you wish to include all levels (for a Table of Contents) - in both cases simply click OK, and then specify a file to hold the actual Index/TOC. You can now exit from the LinkIndex/TOC utility.

The last step is now to return to Quark, create a text box in a new document and use the Get Text option to import the Index/TOC file, ENSURING THAT YOU CLICK the box to include Style Sheets. The Index/TOC will now appear, ready for you to format. To assist in this process, Quark Styles have been created and applied to Main Index and Sub Index entries for a generated Index and for each level created in a Table of Contents.
